What is Sudoku?

Sudoku is a logic-based, combinatorial number-placement puzzle. The objective is to fill a 9×9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3×3 sub-grids contain all digits from 1 to 9 exactly once. The puzzle provides a partially completed grid, which for a well-posed puzzle has a single unique solution.

Sudoku Difficulty Levels Explained

Difficulty is assigned automatically using Sudoku Explainer (SE) scoring — based on the hardest technique actually needed to solve each puzzle, not just the number of given clues.

Easy

Solvable with Hidden Singles and Naked Singles only — the most basic eliminations. No pencil marks required.

Medium

Requires Locked Candidates and simple Naked/Hidden Pairs. A good level for regular solvers building their skills.

Hard

Needs X-Wings, Swordfish, and intersecting candidate patterns. Pencil marks are essential at this level.

Fiendish

Complex chains, XY-Wings, and multi-step inference are required. For experienced solvers only.

Diabolical

The hardest class — Alternating Inference Chains (AICs) and forcing nets are needed to crack these puzzles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I print Sudoku puzzles for free?

Yes! sudoku2pdf is 100% free to use. You can generate and download as many PDF files as you like without any hidden fees or registration requirements.

How many Sudoku puzzles can I generate?

There is no limit. You can choose any number of pages and generate as many PDF files as you like — each one will contain fresh, unique puzzles.

Are the puzzles unique?

Every puzzle has exactly one valid solution, verified by a constraint-propagation solver. Each puzzle also has a permanent ID so you can use the “Exclude puzzle IDs” option to avoid repeating ones you’ve already printed.

What is the hardest Sudoku level?

“Diabolical” is the hardest level, requiring Alternating Inference Chains (AICs) and forcing nets to solve. Difficulty is graded using Sudoku Explainer (SE) scoring — the five levels (Easy, Medium, Hard, Fiendish, Diabolical) reflect the hardest technique actually needed to solve each puzzle, not just the clue count.

What is a minimal Sudoku puzzle?

A minimal puzzle has no redundant clues: removing any single given number would make the puzzle ambiguous (more than one valid solution). This is the tightest possible constraint for a uniquely-solvable grid. Not all valid Sudoku puzzles are minimal — some carry extra clues that do not affect uniqueness. Use the “Minimal puzzles only” option in the generator to filter to this subset.

Can I get the solutions to the puzzles?

Yes, in two ways. When generating a PDF you can enable the “Include solutions” option to print each solution grid alongside its puzzle. You can also look up any puzzle at any time using its ID on the step-by-step solver, which walks you through the solution technique by technique.
